What’s the key to academic success in college? It’s forming good study habits, of course! Between adjusting to life on campus, activities, social life, work, and other obligations, that can be challenging. Still, by establishing good study habits, keeping on top of your assignments and maximizing your efforts will become second nature. Here are six study related habits that all students should adopt.

  1. Create a Comfortable And Functional Study Space

It’s hard to struggle when you are working in a space that is uncomfortable or full of distractions. Take some time to set up a study area that is comfortable, well-lit, and functional. If possible invest in a comfortable chair and desk or table. Stock it well with paper, pens, pencils, and other supplies. This will allow you to focus on your studies without running to fetch supplies.

  1. Set Time Aside to Study Each Day

Successful students study each day. Even if you don’t have an assignment pending, there is always something that you can review. If nothing else, spend the time organizing notes, or looking up future assignments on your rubric. Remember that the best study habits are executed on a daily basis. Once studying is a part of your daily schedule, you will be less likely to procrastinate or blow it off.

  1. Make a List of Goals For Each Study Session

Have you ever gone grocery shopping with a list? Unless you’re one of those rare people who are super focused and disciplined, you know that can lead to a mishmash of items in your cart. The same thing applies to studying. Without establishing a list of goals, you may not accomplish what you need to. Keep studying organized by creating a check list of goals before you start.

  1. Try Tackling The Hardest Subject First

Let’s be honest, when you’ve reached the end of a study session, you’re getting tired and focusing is hard. This isn’t the time to tackle your toughest assignment. Instead, organize your study schedule so you work on the most difficult subjects first.

  1. Limit Distractions Within Reason

Roommates, loud music, television, and other distractions can prevent you from getting the most out of a study session. Time your studies to avoid these as much as possible. Of course, too much silence can also be an issue. It’s good to learn to study with some distractions. In fact, a small amount of white noise can help you to stay focused and may be preferable to complete silence. You may need to experiment in order to find what works best for you.

  1. Spend Time Each Week Getting Organized

It can be difficult to study effectively if you are constantly wading through old notes, or you have your materials stored in a dozen different places. You will serve yourself well if you set aside an hour a week to get organized. Go through your study materials. Delete files and notes. Consolidate things into the folders in which they belong.


Try to establish these six habits quickly. Once they become ingrained and are second nature, it will become much easier for you to stay on top of your studies.
